We spent a wonderful Thanksgiving this year with our friends and neighbors from Eagle River. Thea's husband Mike is deployed to Afghanistan until February, but she and her daughter Lily, and her sister, Brita joined us at our house for lunch today. Lily wore her special dress she has been saving all year until Thanksgiving, and she entertained Duke
by reading to him from her Barbie coloring book while the adults played Catchphrase. We all came up with the top 10 things we were thankful for this year (we all have much more than 10!), we had a wonderful lunch, doing some major damage to a 17lb turkey, which I am proud to say I didn't burn :) Brant and I finished the night off by watching Home Alone, our yearly tradition and trying to feed Duke the giblets, which he is not too fond of :)

Tomorrow, we are going to get our Christmas tree and start decorating! Brant has spent a lot weekends fishing this summer...I went along on the ones that didn't start at 5am!! We didn't have much luck fishing for red's this year, but Brant did get a couple silver and a halibut - which will fill our freezer until next summer. The summer weather has been absolutely gorgeous this year - mostly in the low to mid 60s. The owners of our home in Eagle River are coming back from their deployment in mid-September, so we began looking in July for a new place. The first day we went looking, we found a house that both Brant and I really loved. It's a great log cabin home away from town, and has a big yard that Duke loves! It was really different than any fishing we were use to (trout fishing in the NC river!). There was no casting, and the rod was pretty heavy and required some muscle work to reel in! It was the end of the salmon season, so we caught a lot of "pink salmon" which are not good to eat. We were trying to catch silvers, and Brant was the only one that actually caught one! Bob and I had a silver on our line, but we lost them :( We still had a great time even though Brant caught the only silver. When Brant was reeling in his silver, our captain helped him, and when it was in the boat, he took a mini wooden bat and whacked the fish over the head three times to kill it. It was really funny and we got it on video! It was a great day and finally warmed up about lunch time. We headed back to the hotel, showered, had some lunch, and watched the Clemson game - we should've stayed out to fish!

On Sunday morning, we had a full day (7am-5pm) of halibut fishing with Captain Steve's Charters. We had about an hour drive to get to Captain Steve's, so it was a very early morning! We got there, and it was not quite as cold as Saturday morning, but it was raining. So, we all got suited up in our rain gear: rubber overalls with suspenders, rain coats, and rubber boots. We looked like we belonged on "The Greatest Catch." We had to drive another 45 minutes to Cook Inlet where we were putting in the boat. The swells were only 3-4 feet, but it felt like they were 20! Before I knew it, Brant and Janet were hanging over the sides letting go of their breakfast. I still felt terrible and was wishing I could let go of mine, but the medicine I took was not letting me. I spent the day lying in the cabin, while Brant and Janet puked on/off in between casting their lines. Bob was having a good 'ole time. We made it with only one crack in the windshield and only one dent in the hood! The car looks like someone colored it in white chalk since we haven't washed it since we left Anderson! The movers are coming at 8am on Friday morning to move us in and we are so excited!! We got into Anchorage and stopped for gas - $4.39 on base, and that's about 10 cents cheaper than off base! We also wore out a squeegie on my windshield - actually the whole car needs to be squeegied! We picked up Brant's truck at the POV - he's glad to finally have his baby back :) He's been without it for over a month now. We got on base and checked in - the apartment we are in is pretty nice. We are allowed 30 days to stay in the apartment so that we have time to find someplace to live if we need it, but we'll only be here until Friday morning. The weather is beautiful - about 67 degrees - it feels so nice outside! We drove around the base for a little bit. We found the hospital where Brant will be working - it's right inside one of the entrance gates, so he won't have to battle too much traffic in the mornings! We found the base exchange - we can buy groceries, clothes, etc. (they pretty much have everything that WalMart has) but a little cheaper. The base is beautiful - the mountains are in the backdrop, there is a lot of green spaces, and creeks with trails, etc. Brant has to report to the hospital tomorrow morning just to sign in and say he's here. I had to give him a haircut tonight as he's let his hair grow for the past month :) He refuses to get the "high and tight" haircut that they give at the barber shop here - haha. When he's done in the morning at the base hospital, we're going to go over to Providence Alaska Medical Center where I"ll be working to meet the people I'll be working with and check it out! We've got lots of errands to run tomorrow and things to get organized before Brant starts full time on Friday. Thankfully, I won't start work until the 25th, so I can put the house together next week :) We'll keep y'all updated!! Our cell phones work now too, but don't forget we're 4 hours behind EST :) Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4132907237586819114.post-23924353104088255422008-08-13T20:17:00.008-08:002008-08-13T21:24:25.069-08:00Day 13: Tok, Alaska We made it back into the USA and Alaska today!!
